Now, I know its not Mango season anymore in most parts of the world. And posting a Mango recipe at this time of the year would be a torture for those who have just got over the fact that they would have to wait for at least 2 quarters of the year to get the taste of a fresh produce. But thanks to the technology and preserving techniques, we have canned Mango pulp now. Which I know are no good as the real ones, but its still something. And it makes your life easier as well. So I made this mango kesari i.e. Sooji ka halwa (sheera) using canned mango pulp the other day and it turned out to be fantastic! The pics are not great since I got a bit late in clicking the photos and the halwa lost its shiny and smooth texture in the meanwhile. Which makes no difference to the taste but a huge one to the photos.
Why did I get late in clicking, you ask me? Well, I couldn’t control and dug straight into the pan to have some. And I just couldn’t stop! I must have had at least half of the halwa vanished when I realised I need to save some to take the pictures at least. And by that time, it was all dark and halwa had lost its initial lustre. Phew!
I hope you don’t mind the bad photos and still go for the recipe because it’s a keeper. This halwa/sheera tastes so much more flavourful and exotic than the simple and plain Sooji ka halwa. It can be made ahead of time and frozen in deep freezer for upto 3-4 weeks. But in that case, when you reheat- thaw it properly first for a few hours and then reheat in batches to let it come back to its original state.
This mango sheera/halwa tastes amazing with a spiced up poori like Bedmi poori or methi ki poori or batata poori (potato puri) etc. We had the combo of batata poori, this ambyacha sheera (mango halwa) and spinach & peanut raita for the breakfast last weekend. Needless to say, we were both dead by lethargy and overeating for the next few hours. But then that was totally worth it! 😀 😀
There are more fruits and vegetables that you could easily combine the basic sooji halwa/sheera with to bring variety in your meals and also to make it healthier. Like I have made this Beetroot sooji halwa and also Mango carrot halwa both of which are healthy and easy recipes.
Vegan alternative– You can easily make this recipe Vegan by omitting ghee and milk from it. Replace ghee with coconut oil and milk with water. You could also replace milk with coconut milk and that would taste amazing. Just like this Mango coconut barfi.
If you are using fresh mangoes instead of canned pulp– take the sweetest mangoes available like Alphonso or Kesari variety. And use ¾ cup of pulp instead of ½ cup as given in the recipe below. If you are using fresh mangoes, you may add a pinch of salt to the halwa to balance out the tartness.
