In the food blogging world, there are some events that are iconic. Susan’s brainchild, My Legume Love Affair (MLLA for short) is one such event. MLLA was started 8 years ago by Susan of The Well-Seasoned Cook and since early 2013 the baton has been passed on to Lisa Turner of Food and Spice who has been successfully carrying on MLLA since then.
Bloggers line up and wait impatiently for their turn to host the event, and it gives me immense pleasure to (finally!) host MLLA-76. I have myself participated in more than a dozen editions, and have won #43 hosted by Claire of ChezCaynne for my recipe of Indian Red Kidney beans curry.
If you are new to this event, let’s do a brief on what sort of recipes are to be linked up here.
What are legumes?
Legumes are the class of grains that includes beans, peas and lentils — are among the most versatile and nutritious foods available. Legumes are typically low in fat, contain no cholesterol, and are high in folate, potassium, iron and magnesium. They also contain beneficial fats and soluble and insoluble fiber. A good source of protein, legumes can be a healthy substitute for meat, which has more fat and cholesterol. Famous for their high Protein content,
Some common legumes are:
- Adzuki beans
- Garbanzo beans / Chickpeas
- Black eyed peas
- Edamame
- All lentils
- Red kidney beans
- Soy beans
Again, why should you eat legumes?
- Excellent source of protein
- Good source fiber (approximately 15 g/cup)
- Most varieties provide half our folate requirements
- A good source of phosphorus, potassium, iron, zinc, calcium, and selenium
- Contain Thiamin (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), B5 and B6
- Rich in antioxidants
- Low Glycemic Index
I am a Lacto-vegetarian, and my blog is mostly about wholesome vegetarian and vegan food. And hence I have already posted a lot of recipes with Legumes. And I always yearn for more in my list.
What’s better way than hosting an edition of MLLA? Now, some rules for the participation below:
- Any cuisine, any culture, all courses (appetizers, main course, dessert), vegetarian, or Vegan, the choice is yours – are welcome as long as ‘legumes’ are the star, the main ingredient. Any derivative such as Roasted gram flour, Tofu etc. would also be considered provided the main ingredient is again, the legume derivative.
- However, if your recipe contains these or for that matter, any other legume in small quantities, like say a spoonful, or as a garnish, or as an auxiliary or an optional ingredient, your entry will NOT qualify for the event
- ONE entry PER Blogger is allowed.
- Please send in your entries between today – 31st October to this email address – nupurs.kitchen@gmail.com with the title – {My Legume Love Affair #76} in the subject line and providing your Blog name, URL and recipe title in the email. I will post the roundup first week of November and announce the winner, selected randomly.
Prize for the winner-
For this month, Hurst Beans has agreed to continue as a sponsor meaning US residents have a chance to win a 6-pack assortment of products by the N.K. Hurst Company.
Also, Susan is generously sponsoring a prize each month that she will ship worldwide, at her own expense. The prize this month is this fantastic cookbook by Ivy – More than a Greek Salad. If the random winner is a resident of the US, they will win both the Hurst Bean Prize and Susan’s offering – otherwise a second draw will take place for the Hurst prize from the pool of US residents
Folks, any questions, pop me an email and I shall get back to you.
